ReplyDeleteI learned how other people view different events. An example of this is when we were talking about Atticus's parenting skills. I thought it was good but other people disagreed or had different reasons for him being a good parent. Also, I agreed when someone said that the case of Tom was like that of a mockingbird. Everyone is shooting and killing (not literally) Tom for his skin color when in reality, he's innocent like a mockingbird which is what Atticus sees. Lastly, I'm feeling pretty good about the book so far. We haven't heard any news about Boo in a while though.
ReplyDeleteOne of my classmates said that change is possible, and he thinks that something like the Tom Robinson case will spark something like a revolution in a small conservative town. I disagreed, but it made me think of all the possibilities etc. Along with that, i'm enjoying reading To Kill a Mockingbird because of the many issues and problems. It's interesting guessing and checking how things turn out.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I learned is that Atticus and his kids are more then family. I agreed with the statement change is possible. I am enjoying the book so far.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I learned from this discussion is that Scout and Jem are on a very friendly level with atticus and treat him like a friend but still respect him. One thing someone said that I agree with is that if Scout was raised by Aunt Alexandra she would be more lady like and proper because she comes from a household with all boys and if Aunt Alexandra raised her she would be raised into being a proper lady. One thing I am enjoying about the book is how Maycomb has a lot of different people in it and its fun to see how they clash. I find some of the words in the book difficult to read.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing I learned from this discussion is the even more of the endless qualities Atticus has that he helps with his children. Still a real professional because of his law degree, he still has times to care for his children. I think Atticus saying that a man with a gun doesn't show courage is insightful because it shows that the pen beats the sword and not everything is solved with violence

DeleteFrom this discussion I learned that Jem and Scout see Atticus as a friend and not as a parent. Since they see him as a friend they respect him more than they would if they saw him as there parent. One thing that I agree with is when Rebecca said that if Aunt Alexandra raised Scout she would be more lady like. But Scout is the way she is because she grew up with a family with all boys. So far I think the book is pretty interesting but at times it can be boring.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I learned from this discussion is that scout and jem are very close with atticus. So close that they call him by his first name, which usually kids don't call their parents by their first names. Another thing was that if scout was raised by another person like aunt Alexandra scout would be more female. I agreed when someone said that if Scout was raised by someone that she would be very different. I feel good about this book.
ReplyDeleteWhat I learned from this discussion is that Atticus has a huge influence on Jem's and Scout's personalities. Scout would be a regular, proper girl if she were raised by Aunt Alexandra. One person that I agreed with was with John when he said that the Finches are isolated because their opinions are different than everyone else's. So far, I am feeling great about this book. I really like it because it's different than all the other books I've read.
ReplyDelete1. I learned that Atticus's ways of parenting are decent, but they could be correcting.
ReplyDelete2. Maycomb was a different place that any other town, but at that time small towns are racist and that it was isolated. It is isolated, but they have influences that other towns would have
3. I really like the book. Of Mice and Men was boring, but this one actually has a plot.
4. They introduced that book really well, and all of the characters developed really well, too. Part 2 should be good.
In the discussion, I learned that Atticus is a very wise and smart father. He teaches his kids through new methods that seem to work very well, for example, he does not just tell the kids what to do and what not to de, he lets them learn there lesson through making mistakes. In addition to his good parenting, he is also just a kind person all the time. As someone said, he is like the white version of Martin Luther King Jr. because he stands up for Tom Robinson despite all the rude and racist comments Atticus and his kids are hearing. I enjoy the story-line of the book and I think it is really interesting how it takes place a long time ago.
ReplyDeleteI learned in the discussions that people can change. Just like how people are judging Atticus for taking the case, people may change later on in the book and realize Atticus is doing it for a good cause. I agree that people can change because people will eventually see why Atticus is doing it, and maybe not judge him as much.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that i learned from the discussion was that atticus is called names and is looked upon as an outsider and that he doesn't belong in the community just because he is defending an african american in a court case. Also that People start to think that atticus cant be trusted because of what he is doing. peo[ple think this because they were born and taught to not like african americans and were taught about their ancestors and how they were on the correct side of the war which would be the confederates in the civil war. they were told that their ancestors died for those beliefs.
ReplyDeleteI learned a lot of new things from discussion, along with agreeing with many things. One of the things I didn't know before is how Atticus is like Martin Luther King Jr. because he believes in equality. Something that I fully agree with is that Maycomb is a hopeless, sad town because there is no change or new ideas, there is lots of racism and little education, and the town is small and has lots of poor people. The book itself, to me, is fascinating. It has given me a new perspective on things, along with being very captivating.
ReplyDeleteI learned from the discussion that if you think differently from the majority, you get segregated. Most people in Maycomb believe Atticus shouldn't be fighting for Tom Robinson, but Atticus believes he should be. I agree with that Atticus is ahead of his time with his views on race. I am enjoying the book a lot more the second time I am reading it, but I don't find anything that difficult. Reflecting on Atticus, I believe he is correct in defending Tom Robinson. I also wouldn't be able to keep my head high around town if I didn't take the Tom robinson case.
ReplyDeleteI think that one of the most important lessons in general was that the negative things that people say are just rumors. There is more negative in the world but Atticus doesn't want his kids to pay attention to that. I don't agree with people who said that Aunt Alexandra could change.I think Aunt Alexandra and Scout are very alike. I think that at the end of the they are both very hard headed and opinionated. They both have same personalities but different ideas. If they were to try to each other, nothing good can happen. I like the book. It highlights the struggles that people go through like trying to figure out who you are but also it shows things that add on like the stories of the Radleys, Ewells, and Cunninghams.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that I learned in the in-class discussion was that a "mockingbird" represents an innocent individual. For example, Tom Robinson is a "mockingbird that is being shot at" because he is innocent but people are blaming him for something that he didn't do. In the book I'm enjoying how there are multiple themes that recur many times within the book.
ReplyDelete2.Many of the classmates were in an agreement that due to Maycomb's isolation to the rest of the country their racist ideas would not change. I disagree with that because like nowadays the people of Maycomb had access to the media, which throughout history has proven to be very influential on peoples ideologies.
ReplyDelete3.Although I have found it to be very predictable I find it very interesting. I can also relate to this book because I too was a second grader and can understand some of Scout's problems.
