Crawl in Someone Else's Skin: Point Of View

Please write an account of one of the events in chapters 1-3 from a point of view other than Scout's. Keep the facts of the event the same. You should be speaking from the mind of another character (what are they thinking?). Think of this as a diary entry from that character's point of view. You can choose from the following episodes:

Dinner at the Finch house (from Walter's perspective)
Burris Ewell (from Miss Caroline's perspective)
Scout explains to Atticus why she'd rather not go to school (from Atticus' perspective)
Scout explains the Cunningham family (from Miss Caroline's point of view)
The confrontation with Burris (from Miss Caroline's point of view)
One of your own choosing (from a character other than Scout's point of view).

This requires you to go back into the text and familiarize yourself with the events as they are seen through the narrator's eyes. Then you must decide how the other character might feel in the situation.

  2. Dear Diary,
So, today I went to Finch's household for dinner today. The food was delicious and they had syrup! We never have syrup here. Besides the yummy food, Scout wasn't very polite to me. I have no idea why she doesn't like me. She first put mud on my nose and then Jem told her to stop and invited me to eat. I have a feeling Scout doesn't like me because while I was putting syrup all over my food she was rambling on about my manners and asked why I was drowning all my food in syrup. I felt so embarrassed and I felt humiliated in front of her father, Jem, and their cook, Cal. I feel horrible, I have no idea why she hates me so much. I want to know though so I can fix myself. Ugh.

  5. Burris and Miss Caroline: From Miss Caroline's Point of View-
That Burris kid is something. I cannot believe what he said to me! How can one child be so rude? Who does he think he is? If he shows up tomorrow with that same attitude, I'll give him a worse punishment than Scout's punishment. I'll be glad if I can make it through this school year, especially with Burris and Scout. I might quit next year, or maybe try to become a third grade teacher.

  6. Dear Diary,
Today I had a run in with Scout. She attacked me because she thinks I got her in trouble. She's the one that talked to Miss Caroline, not me! Anyways, her brother had enough hospitality to invite me over for supper at their place during school. Molasses tastes really good, I think. As I poured it on my food I felt really embarrassed because Scout was giving me the strangest look! I could feel my face get red while Calpurnia took Scout into the kitchen... I'll write more later...

    Love,
    Walter xxx

  7. Dear Diary,
Today for dinner I went to the Finch's. It was nice to talk to Mr.Finch about the crops and Jem and Scout were nice for the most part. While at the table I put some syrup on my food. Scout snapped at me and asked what I was doing! I felt terrible and humiliated. Scout apologized and I forgave her. Overall it was a nice time at the Finch's!

  9. Dear Diary,
Today after school Jem invited me over for dinner. I don't think his sister Scout likes me very much she was shoving my nose in dirt at recess. When I got there I felt out of place and awkward. I wasn't used to being in a nice house. There was lots of food and it all tasted amazing. Jem questioned why I was putting syrup all over my food. Personally, I think everything tastes better with syrup. The whole dinner felt very awkward and I felt like the family was forced to be nice to me because I am not as fortunate as them. The dinner was amazing and I'm very thankful that I was invited over.

I dont get why the Finch family is so upset at me. I think it has too do with that I used a lot of syrup. I heard Atticus talking behind my back. They were acting like they were eating with an animal and I was highly offended. Then this crazy thing happened Calpurina called me into the kitchen. She started talking gibberish then I finally heard her say that a lot of people aren't fortunate enough to eat this meal. Calpurina then said that I better not eat up the table cloth. Anyway it was a crazy day and I hope I can resolve my differences with the Finch family. But Calpurina is crazy and I don't knowww how to talk to her.

  12. Dear Diary,
Today was the first day of teaching first grade. Many unusual incidents occurred today. First a little girl named Scout lied and told me her father did not teacher her how to read. Yet she knew how to read somehow. Then she did not pay attention by writing a letter! Before lunch she mentioned to me that Walter cunnigham did not have any lunch or money. She began to gossip in front of the class and him! I slapped her hand with a ruler and made her stay in a time out until lunch. After lunch a louse ran out of the dirty dirty boys head. The boy name was Buriss Edwell and he was most likely from the country. I asked him politely to leave and he began to cuss at me in front of the whole class. Before he left he called me a slut and make sure I was crying. When he left the rest of the class came to comfort me. I hope tomorrow is better then today.
    Sincerely,
    Miss. Caroline

  13. Today while I was teaching, the most filthy kid came into my classroom. He looks like Gollum from Lord of the Rings. It was weird though, because he acted like a gentleman. While I was trying to regain sense he went and got me a cup of water. Apparently he only comes to school 1 day of the year. I told him to go home because he had cooties, but re tried to stay and eventually left. I am so glad he only comes one day a year.

  14. Dinner at the Finch Household - a diary entry by Walter

Eating at the Finch house was as delicious as it was uncomfortable. It was delicious and plentiful thanks to the skilled black woman in the kitchen and because of all the sugary syrup - but that's when the uncomfortable part came in. I guess Scout was still holding a grudge against me or something after shoving me in the dirt during school, because she embarrassed me at the table by judging my eating habits when I drenched my entire dinner in the delectable syrup. I felt humiliated because I didn't and still don't fully understand the dinner habits of what must be a normal family.

  17. Today Jem and Scout Finch invited me to their house for dinner. At first I was hesitant to accept, for I had just been harassed by Scout, but after thinking about it took them up on their offer. After walking with them home from school we finally arrived at their home. As I entered I could smell the variety of fragrances, it smelt fantastic. I couldn't wait for the food to come out, I was starving. After the food came out Mr. Finch and I started talking about the farm life, he was a very intriguing man to say the least. Then after asking for some malasis and putting it on my food, I was harassed once again by Scout. I don't even understand what I was doing wrong, he just must not like me. After a fine meal and a nice conversation with Mr. Finch it was time to leave.

  18. Today i had dinner at the finchs house. I was kind of odd to eat dinner with scout because she was commenting and telling me how i should eat and how i shouldn't.
she was wondering why i was eating my dinner with molasses all over. i guess thats not how they eat here. I felt bad so i stopped eating and i looked down and just blanked out. I then saw her leave the room so i just started to eat my food and tried to eat as fast as i could just to be able to leave their house and go home.

  19. Dear Diary,
When I had dinner with the Finch's it was embarrassing. They had great food and syrup. I took a lot and Scout asked me why I did. It is because I never get syrup. I am starting to get a feeling Scout doesnt like me.

  20. Dear Diary,
Today was my first day of 1st grade, the day was going good till lunch. Miss Caroline told us to take out our lunch, I had none, and she tried to give me a quarter. I can't afford no quarter. But Scout's brother Jem invited me to lunch 'cause Scout rubbed my nose in dirt. At dinner, they had tons of food, I grabbed a lot, then I pored the molasses all over it. Scout asked me what I was doing, I was so embarrassed. What was I thinking? Then their cook Calpurnia yelled at Scout in the kitchen, I felt so bad, I didn't mean any trouble. She had to eat dinner in the other room. I hope we can still be friends.

  21. Dear Diary,
Today scout talked to me about how she'd rather not go to school. She has some valid points on why she doesn't want to go to school but she has to go, school is a requirement. She's going rather she likes it or not

  22. Jem touching the house, from Jem's POV
The way Dill said that he "like to see what he looks like." when we were talking about Boo Radley is enough to make me shiver and run away. Then of course he suggests that I do it. I had to think about it. It took me 3 days until he finally pushed to the edge and I had to run to the house and touch it. On the first day he said that I was scared. The only response that I could muster up was "Ain't scared, just respectful." But of course I was scared. He's daring me to go and get a crazy person out of his house, one that he stayed in for 15 years. This went for for another day, until the third day I had enough. I just had to run up and touch the house. I stood there for a second just staring. I ran up to the house smacked the side fast and kept running until I reached my house.

  23. Dear Diary,
Today I had dinner at the Finch house, I didn't have a good time. They had tons of food and syrup! Before the meal I just put some syrup on my veggies and waffles and Scout asked "what in sam hill i was doing" So I quickly returned the syrup and I was embarrassed. I think they just don't understand. I've never seen that much food and syrup in my life. When she came back into the room she seemed so much more calm, also a little red in the cheeks. Life's an adventure being a Cunningham.

  24. Dear Diary,
I was able to join the Finches for dinner, today. I figure that the only reason Jem invited me was because he felt bad that Scout had hurt me. At first, when Jem invited me, I was afraid that Scout would hurt me again. However, when I was reminded that our fathers were friends, I couldn't turn down an opportunity to have dinner. I reckon I haven't had dinner for many years. Once we arrived at the Finch's house, I was appalled to find that the Finches had a cook. We could never have enough food, much less enough money to pay a cook. The food she cooked was delicious to my empty stomach. Then I thought, this was my opportunity to have some molasses. Molasses can make any food taste amazing, and I am only allowed to have any every Christmas. So, I asked for some molasses. Of course, the Finches were so generous and let me pour as much as I wanted on my plate. That was when Scout, so rudely, asked me why I was pouring molasses on my meat and vegetables. My face must have grown redder than the tomato on my plate, once she said that. Then Scout was taken away from the table to be scolded by the cook. Other than that instance, the dinner was very nice. I will always be greatful towards the Finches.
